Framing the Dialogue

The Unfinished Sentence

I love Chinese food.  Sometimes it is an adventure trying some new food, but I have had great experiences as these restaurants.  A favorite part of the dining experience is getting the fortune cookie with the bill at the end of the meal.  I should clarify that I enjoy getting the cookie not the bill.  It can be fun sharing your fortune with your dining partners.

Over the years, I have collected some of my favorite fortunes even though many no longer are “fortunes.”  There is a game that you can play with your fortunes by simply adding the phrase “in bed” after you have read yours.  It certainly adds some humor to the meal, but you may NOT want to do this with work colleagues or young children.

Over the past few weeks I have been listening to politicians and pundits making speeches about various issues.  It is funny (funny sad, not funny happy) that each side has talking points that are diametrically opposed to each other so both cannot be true yet each side swears that his side is telling the truth.  In order for this to work there must be an unfinished word or phrase after their statement that when added makes their statement true.

I have compiled a few that have been more prominent:

President Barack Obama in a speech at a meeting in New Hampshire on August 11, 2009 stated again that;

“If you like your health care plan, you can keep your health care plan”

The finished sentence should have been;

If you like your health care plan, you can keep your health care plan, but you will be required to pay a tax on any health care benefits that exceeds the government plan until you can no longer afford your plan”

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi in an op ed written with Steny Hoyer about the health care debate;

“We believe it is healthy for such a historic effort to be subject to so much scrutiny and debate.”

The finished sentence should have been;

“We believe it is healthy for such a historic effort to be subject to so much scrutiny and debate even though we really tried to ram it down your throats before anyone had a chance to read the bill.”

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi in the same op ed written with Steny Hoyer about the health care debate;

“Drowning out opposing views is simply un-American.”

The finished sentence should have been;

“Drowning out opposing views in simply un-American unless it is our ACORN or Union buddies [people who contribute gobs of money to the Democrats for favorable legislation] drowning out conservative views.  How DARE they steal our tactics!”

Representative Baron Hill regarding the Americans attending and voicing their opposition to the health care bill;

“The war’s on…I’m trying to control the event.  What I don’t want to do is create an opportunity for the people who are political terrorists to blow up the meeting and not try to answer thoughtful questions.”  [emphasis added]

The finished sentence should have been;

“The war’s on…I’m trying to control the event.  What I don’t want to do is create an opportunity for the people who are political terrorists to blow up the meeting and not try to answer thoughtful questions.  I only pretend to listen to constituents when I am trying to get elected.  People should know that we “blue dogs” are democrats who just pretend to be conservative to get elected in conservative districts.”

Senator Arlen Spector on being called on the “carpet” for supporting a health care bill that he did not read;

“”I will not vote for a health care plan that produces a deficit.”

The finished sentence should have been;

“I will not vote for a health care plan that produces a deficit as determined by President Obama’s team and not that pesky Congressional Budget Office who predicted sharper deficits if the plan becomes law.”

NBC’s Andrea Mitchellreporting” [pontificating] on why MOST Americans do not want a large intrusion into their health care;

“They don’t like what they’re hearing. Now, they may not know what’s good for them.”

The finished sentence should have been;

“They don’t like what they’re hearing. Now, they may not know what’s good for them even though we in the media have been telling” them that they need to go along with President Obama.  I remember to olden days when Walter Cronkite could simply tell Americans what to think.”

Congressman Peter DeFazio speaking at a town hall meeting regarding the health care legislation;

“The President has made a pledge that it’s going to be paid for.  How it will be paid for is not yet clear.”

The finished sentence should have been;

“The President has made a pledge that it’s going to be paid for.  How it will be paid for is not yet clear, but he assured us that it will be paid for and I trust the President.  He only alters his promises (lies to us) when it suits him like when he said the Stimulus will create jobs and when he said that ALL legislation will be available at least five days before it is voted upon.”

OR

“The President has made a pledge that it’s going to be paid for.  How it will be paid for is not yet clear, but I think that we will have to raise taxes on the evil rich, the oil companies, the insurance industry, or sorry, but I cannot remember who we are supposed to demonize on this one.  Maybe it is Wall Street or the banks, no, I think it is the pharmaceutical industry.  There are just so many to demonize.  I got it, we are supposed to demonize trial lawyers.  Oops, not that was wrong.  May I retract that last part?”

Senator Benjamin Cardin on his professed thoughtfulness before he would agree to vote for health care legislation;

“I’m withholding judgment until I see the package.”

The finished sentence should have been;

I’m withholding judgement until I see the package.  You know that I probably won’t have time to actually read the package, but I want to see it.  By the time it passes you’ll be focused, hopefully, on another celebrity death, divorce or season of American Idol.”

Senator Arlen Specter at another town hall meeting regarding Americans stating their objections;

“Traditionally people who come to town meetings have objections. They may not be representative of America, but they are significant, and their views have to be taken into account.”

The finished sentence should have been;

“Traditionally people who come to town meetings have objections. They may not be representative of America, but they are significant, and their views have to be taken into account.  I am, of course, ignoring the latest polling data that shows that a majority of Americans are against health care reform.  You know that we politicians rarely look at poll numbers.”

President Barack Obamaon how Americans are stating thier views on his health care take over and what he thinks of their views;

“I don’t mind cleaning up after them, but don’t do a lot of talking,”

The finished sentence should have been;

I don’t mind cleaning up after them, but don’t do a lot of talking.  I won the presidency even though over 61 million American voted against me and I was annointed in January and people should let me do whatever I want to this evil country.  People think that they have a right to speak about whatever they want, but not for long.  If you hear anyone saying anything against me, you should report them to flag@whitehouse.gov so that we can “evaluate” what they have said.”

White House deputy chief of staff Jim Messina talking to Democratic Congressional members about how to handle “un-American” [according to Nancy Pelosi] crowds at town hall meetings;

“If you get hit, we will punch back twice as hard.”

The finished sentence should have been’

“If you get hit, we will punch back twice as hard as our ACORN and Union buddies are ready to take on those sinister veterans, housewives, elderly, and working stiffs and I don’t mean that we will stage opposing protests, I really mean that we will punch them at least until we can pass some legislation like Woodrow Wilson’s Sedition Act.  Then we’ll just throw them in jail.”

Sean Connery’s character in the movie the untouchables about getting Al Capone;

“You wanna know how to get Capone? They pull a knife, you pull a gun. He sends one of yours to the hospital, you send one of his to the morgue. That’s the *Chicago way! And that’s how you get Capone.”

Is this the “Chicago Politics Way?”  Do you get the feeling that we un-American, uniformed, mobs who don’t know what is good for us may be getting our message across or should we be quiet [shut up] or be punched?

Remember that WE SURROUND THEM!

Has anybody seen or heard from Joe Biden recently?
