The Hobbit and then The Lord of the Rings trilogy have been my favorite books of all time. I have probably read them each a dozen times. There is no higher praise that I can give a book than to read it over and over again.
J.R.R. Tolkien wrote these classic books with a simple story line; Good VS Evil. In The Hobbit, a normal homebodied creature is convinced to go on a worldly adventure with wizards, elves and orcs. One of his discoveries on this adventure became the basis of the follow-up trilogy.
The Lord of the Rings was made into very successful movies that are worth watching. Do not let that stop you from reading the books. I have never heard anyone say that any movie is better than the book. Sorry Peter Jackson, the books are better.
It has been announced that Peter Jackson will produce the film version of The Hobbit.
