That is not a typo on the book name; it is author Don Brine’s attempt at a parody of the more famous book by Dan Brown. My guess is that Brine (AKA Adam Roberts) wants not only to parody Brown’s best seller, but trivialize the theories in The daVinci Code.
“a man had a very cunning theory which he wrote down in a book, and it proved to be very popular indeed…But then it turned out that this very cunning theory was not so cunning after all because it wasn’t true. Not even remotely. Not even a tiny bit likely.”
In his “fishy parody” titled The Da Vinci Cod Brine starts with a spectacular murder of an art curator who leaves coded messages to reveal his secrets and his killer. The characters include a shadowy “exterminator,” an inept famous code breaker, an attractive female, a priest, and an English gentleman. The parody centers around fish and is as funny as Dan Brown’s novel is a serious book about secrets closely held by the Catholic Church.
Maybe The DaVinci Cod would have been funnier if I had read The daVinci Code more recently. I found some of the numerous asides distracting and not very funny and almost made me stop reading. To his credit, Brine did not seem to use as many in later chapters. The best that I can say is that the book had some humorous moments and was rather short and I bought it off of the clearance rack of Half Priced Books for a dollar.
