Originally published in 1993, author William Langewiesche took an in-depth look at the United States-Mexico border. As is typical of Langewiesche’s work he immersed himself into his subject. He returned to an area in which he had worked as a bush pilot. This story touches on many hot button issues like illegal immigration and drugs, but the author goes much deeper and gives us a glimpse of the lives of many of those nameless people and tells their side. We learn of their desires to improve their lives and you might be appalled to read about their treatment on both sides of the border in Cutting for Sign.

“In its scale and complexity, it is difficult place to know. Consider just the external dimensions – a desert the size of the United States, filling the northern third of Africa, extending south nearly to the edge of the tropical forests. Only a fifth of this vastness is the sand of popular imagination, formed into the great dune seas called ergs in Arabic; the rest is rock and gravel plain, and high rugged mountain.”
A few days ago I posted a number of comments by Obama’s “friends“ that were less than complimentary. At the end I purposefully left off the thousands and thousands of gaffes by his running mate and the guy next in line to the presidency, Joe Biden. I shouldn’t be surprised that even Joe couldn’t find a way to force me to use him in the post. IT IS EXTREMELY SCARY THAT THIS LOOSE-TONGUED IDIOT IS THE VICE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES.  He is like an overdone SNL skit though all SNL skits are almost always overdone. I have to grudgingly admit that the new teeth and hair look better than the old Joe. You can put new hair and teeth on a pig, but it is still Joe Biden.
Yahoo’s is the answer. I have a quandary. I don’t want to use Google for web searches because of their overt hypocrisy of supporting Obama, cow-towing to China and other tyrannical nations, and their “official†spin that they are somehow all about freedom for individuals. Out of habit I have tended to use Yahoo for my searches, but these folks are mind-numbingly (I don’t think that is a word) bad. I posted a “Sweet Sixteen†of Yahoo’s banners a while back so I am never surprised, but today’s banner was beyond the pale.
Many may remember Lara Logan’s ordeal during Egypt’s Arab Spring. She was reporting on the uprising (supported by the Obama Administration) when she was attacked and raped multiple times. I have to admit to knowing very little about her politics or her professional work. Ms. Logan recently did a piece for CBS and 60 Minutes of all news outlets on terrorism. Her findings shatter the Obama foreign policy of apology and appeasement [my words not hers]. The following are some quotes from a recent speech on terrorism followed by a video of the speech. It is worth watching and while scary it is refreshing to see a reporter speaking truth rather than talking points.
“Ivan is thrilled. Mikhail is devastated. All their lives, they have been equal, the way good Soviet Men should be. They had nothing, and nothing is what they shared equally. You could not have asked for a purer expression of true communism. As Mikhail watches Ivan’s lot improve, he seethes. He complains to the local soviet, but there’s nothing they can do, because even in the U.S.S.R., it’s not against the law to have a cow. Mikhail briefly considers reporting his friend to the Cheka, but finally decides against it; after all, he’s not a bad man, just a poor man…he does something he’d almost forgotten how to do. He prays…’All my life I have striven to be a good atheist and not believe in you. But now, I humbly come to you directly. Please, God, please hear my prayer. Please make us equal again.’ For a moment all is silent. Then, to his utter amazement, a voice emerges out of the clouds, a voice that only he can hear, ‘Mikhail,’ says God, ‘your prayers have been answered. You shall be made equal again.’ Mikhail leaps to his feet in disbelief. A look of transfigured radience plays across his noble Slavic peasant features. He cannot believe his good fortune. ‘Oh good!’ he exclaims. ‘You’re going to kill Ivan’s cow!”
Brad Thor has done it again. Perhaps stealing from recent headlines about the Presidents “kill list” Thor’s Black List puts hero Scot Harvath once again in grave danger. Most of his usual resources are no longer at this disposal and he has to rely on old “friends” for help as death seems barely a step behind him as they seem to know his every move. Perhaps more chilling is the opening note from Brad Thor
“All of the technology contained in this novel is based on systems currently deployed, or in the final stages of development, by the United States government and its partners.”
Ruth Ann Buzzi:  Ruth Ann Buzzi is an American comedienne and actress of theatre, film, and television and is most known for her appearances on the 60/70s hit show Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In. Before leaving New York for a career in Los Angeles as a television star, Buzzi played in several musical variety shows and television commercials, some of which won national awards including the coveted Clio Award.  Buzzi’s first national recognition on television came on The Garry Moore Show.  In the late 1960s, she was featured as a semi-regular on the sitcom That Girl as Marlo Thomas’s friend.  A versatile comedienne, she played everything from dowdy old women, to tipsy drunks, to Southern belles to flashy hookers.  Her most famous character is the dowdy spinster Gladys Ormphby, clad in drab brown with her bun hairdo covered by a visible hairnet knotted in the middle of her forehead. In most sketches, she used her lethal purse, with which she would flail away vigorously at anyone who incurred her wrath.
There was a news item a few days ago that got very little attention yet was perhaps the story of 2012 less than two weeks into the new year. It should have been front page above the fold with a bold, red headline. The total debt of the United States now exceeds our Gross Domestic Product, or
“The 100% mark means that your entire debt is as big as everything you’re producing in your country.”
“Economist Mark Zandi of Moody’s Analytics says reaching the 100% mark shows ‘the grave need to address our long-term fiscal problems.”
I have a suggestion. It is probably not very practical. It would be fairly impossible to accomplish, but I would love to have it work for a while.
First I’d like the Republican presidential candidates to suspend their campaigns for a month, maybe 45 days. No more endless debates, no more Cain bimbo eruptions, no more Perry gaffes, no more Romney (actually vanilla-flavored Romney has pretty much been quiet), Newt can still zing the media. Let’s no longer give the media fodder so they can avoid and provide cover for what should be the big story on every night’s newscast. Second let’s forget about Kim Kardashian’s fake marriage and all other Hollywood drivel. Third let’s ignore anything with the word “occupy” anywhere in the title.Â
