I was preparing to post/blast Obama’s latest little gem calling for “spending reductions in the tax code.” Perhaps he believes all of the hype about how smart he is and how dumb we are. He’s not and we’re not (smart and dumb respectively). Jon Stewart beat me to the punch…
Consider the case of Democrat Charles Rangel. After serving in the military Rep. Rangel was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives where he rose to the extremely powerful position of Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee. As chairman of that committee he oversaw the development of the tax code to which you and I have to comply. During his ascension to power Mr. Rangel seems to have accumulated a great deal of wealth, perhaps even beyond the amount you would expect on his government salary. Recently found guilty of breaking house ethics rules and censured Rangel does not seem to understand what he really did wrong…for the most part.

Happy “Tax Day” which actually refers to the day our income tax returns are due to be postmarked to the IRS. There is actually a “Tax Freedom Day” as estimated by The Tax Foundation. This is the day through which all of your earnings are taken by government (if they took it all first). The 2009 Tax Freedom day was actually two days ago (April 13) which is the earliest it has been in some time. After April 13, you theoretically work for yourself.
As I listened to the news a few weeks ago, my anger rose. The report suggested that the Obama Administration was looking at cutting or reducing the tax credit available for home mortgage interest credit. THAT’S MY DEDUCTION! I was furious.
That’s how the politicians get you! They dangle some little portion of tax code in front of you that “benefits” you and in order to preserve that tidbit you will probably accept most any “reform” as long as your deduction is left alone. That is how they maintain power. That is what our current tax code is…Power for the Politicians.
