Separated At Birth – Brannigan/Schumer

Captain Zapp Brannigan:  Zapp is a character on the comedy show Futurama and senior member of the military of the Democratic Order of Planets (D.O.O.P.) though his title varies; he has been referred to as a “25 star General”, Captain, Rear Brigadier, “General Major Webelo”, Christopher Rossi, and Commodore 64.  He is arrogant, incompetent, chauvinistic, cocky, vain, and painfully stupid.  Although he claims to be a strategic genius, Zapp Brannigan is actually an imbecile and a coward whose plans are always absurd.  Zapp is inexplicably well-respected throughout the universe, appearing as a Miss Universe Judge and often (ineffectively) defending Earth from attacks.  Most battles are lost with Zapp in charge, due to his stupidity and incompetence; however sometimes the army is lucky. Zapp doesn’t care about casualties and cheerfully sends wave after wave of his own men to die in battle: it is implied that most of his ‘tactical’ victories have been pyrrhic, achieved only through high death tolls.

My "collection" of ill-fitting CFL bulbs

We have a battle in our household (it’s not that I’ve long since learned to put the seat down).  Okay it is not really a battle, but I can tolerate compact fluorescent light (“CFL”) bulbs and my wife hates them.  When I tried to sneak them into a socket she would promptly replace them deriding their weak, yellow light.  In the olden days she was pretty much right on with that description, but the newer, higher wattage bulbs are much brighter and clean (whiter light).  These improvements came too late for her though because her preference is set.  I like the fact that the bulbs do seem to last longer, but sometimes trying to get one to fit into a lamp can be a trial-and-error process and that has been expensive especially as I buy the higher output bulbs.  I now have a drawer full of rejects that won’t fit in fixtures gathering dust.  In our room, my lamp has CFL hers has Edison’s classic and that works for us.  But not for long…

Mobs’ Rules (Democracy)

As a rational man it is hard to watch what has been going on in the Democrat Party without feeling pity for their plight. Don’t get me wrong I really hope their woes continue for the next several decades even though they need to win once in a while to keep the Republicans-In-Name-Only (“RINO”) in their place. But their recent level of disdain for the founding principles of our country is outrageous. Michelle Malkin wrote a great article on the hide-and-seek Democrats and offered this quote;

Update 2 – Liberal Alters – Unions

It’s been a whole day since I updated the Union Liberal Alter, but the events in Wisconsin scream for comment.  First off a little recent history.  In 2008/2009 we were repeatedly told that “elections have consequences” and that Democrats won and they could rule as they pleased.  It turns out that the electorate was not very pleased and in 2010 we had more of those election consequences only this time the Republicans swept.  The Republican sweep in the U.S. House was the primary focus of most news reports, but perhaps more importantly was the Republican sweep in the states.  The Republicans now have 29 governorships and have “more seats in the state legislatures than they have had since 1928″ and they are itching for real change.

Update: Liberal Alters – Unions

Unions and local Democrat politicians have devised wicked schemes to favor union companies from minimum wage rates, to prevailing wage requirement, to Project Labor Agreements (prevent non-union companies from bidding on publicly funded projects). Allegheny County (Pittsburgh area) has reached a new low with the latest tactic. Rather than their usual playbook favoring union shops, they now are going directly after local businesses that are not unionized.

IRS Offers Revised Plan to Tax Cheats

NEW YORK — The IRS unveiled a new __________ (initiative, set of rules for politicians, plan to hire thousands of agents, kinder-gentler enforcement approach)  yesterday that’s intended to lure tax evaders, but with stiffer penalties than in a previous program.  Americans with hidden offshore accounts have until Aug. 31 to report the accounts to the Internal Revenue Service in exchange for penalties below what __________ (politicians, Hollywood stars, they would, we) ordinarily pay.  Defense lawyers had been ________ (wondering how to make money on, speculating about, getting ready to turn themselves in, suing someone over)  a possible new program after recent statements by IRS officials.  The agency created the latest program amid a widening crackdown on offshore accounts sold to wealthy Americans.

Separated At Birth – Geri/Reid

Geri:  Geri is a popular Pixar character thrust on the international scene after his appearance after the blockbuster Toy Story movie.  The elderly Geri plays a game of chess against himself becoming each of the players by moving to the other side of board.  He seems to change personalities depending on which side he sits.  At a point late in the game the “nice” Geri feigns a heart attack to distract the “bad” Geri and literally turns the board on his opponent.  Realizing that he is beaten the bad Geri hands over the prize – his false teeth.  Sadly there is only one Geri and he has been playing alone at the chess board.

Adding Injury to Injury

Consider the case of Democrat Charles Rangel. After serving in the military Rep. Rangel was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives where he rose to the extremely powerful position of Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee.  As chairman of that committee he oversaw the development of the tax code to which you and I have to comply.  During his ascension to power Mr. Rangel seems to have accumulated a great deal of wealth, perhaps even beyond the amount you would expect on his government salary.  Recently found guilty of breaking house ethics rules and censured Rangel does not seem to understand what he really did wrong…for the most part.

Nicked by the Bullet

A few weeks ago I postulated about how much damage the lame duck session of Congress would inflict on the American people (Duck Duck Screwed). Like my Amazon Wish List, liberals had their own, more costly wish list that we would have to pay for. Many of these items were specifically not brought to the floor prior to the election as they were vote killers and would have likely precipitated an even more lopsided win by Republicans.

News Briefs – Volume XXI

News briefs are a collection of interesting news stories…

Brief 1:  Let’s call this one “Corn For Clunkers.”  Obama’s Environmental Protection Agency(:EPA”)  is looking out for you or so they claim, but they are not as in tune with what’s good for your car.  EPA has approved the sale of an ethanol/gasoline mix containing up to 15% of the corn-based ethanol.  The only problem is that this mix would be very harmful to engines manufactured before 2007 (that’s two out of three vehicles in our household).  Will someone explain what law gives the EPA the authority to approve/push consumer products?  A group of auto manufacturers and engine makers has filed suit against EPA.
