True American Hero – Bishop John M. D’Arcy

“The ultimate determinant in the struggle now going on for the world will not be bombs and rockets but a test of wills and ideas-a trial of spiritual resolve: the values we hold, the beliefs we cherish and the ideals to which we are dedicated.”

                                                                         Ronald Reagan

Growing up Catholic nearly 50 years ago did not entail a great deal of “gray” areas when it came to right vs wrong debates.  The Ten Commandments are pretty clear and Sister Mary Margaret let us know when we strayed.  Punishment was swift and we survived and were better for it.  As a parent, I especially like number Four (Honor your Father and your Mother), I am not sure my children get the whole “honor” thing (that should trigger a comment if they read my posts).

Audacity (aw – das – it – ee)

Audacity is defined as:

“Bold or insolent heedlessness of restraints, as of those imposed by prudence, propriety, or convention.  An act or instance of intrepidity or insolent heedlessness.”

Synonyms:  nerve, boldness, recklessness, rashness, intrepidity, dauntless, cheek, gall, presumption, chutzpah, impudence, effrontery

Can you use it in a sentence?

Some note the audacity of Barack Obama having written two autobiographies before he had really accomplished anything.

Can you give me an example?

Barack Obama writing TWO autobiographies before he had accomplished anything more than being elected to public office.

A Chilling Development

I was planning on taking the day off from posting.  I played the Subway 3-Point Play game, checked my e-mails took a look at my Amazon account all while watching the NCAA basketball games.  All in all it was a pretty good evening.

As I was getting ready to shut down my system, a headline caught my eye:

GM CEO Wagoner to step down at White House request

President Barack Obama has requested that the Chief Executive Officer of a private, American  resign!  The President of the United States has inserted himself into the workings of a publicly traded company!  Will Obama also “hire” the new CEO?  What are the Administration’s qualifications to run an auto manufacturing company?

What About Barack?

Recent events triggered the memory of a quaint movie starring Bill Murray and Richard Dreyfuss titled What About Bob.  In this 1991 comedy, a dependent, neurotic, and manipulative patient, played by Bill Murray, shows up at his doctor’s vacation and ingratiates himself with the family.  The Dr. Leo Marvin, played by Richard Dreyfuss, is frustrated by the incessant intrusions.  At one point in the movie Dreyfuss screams as Bob again intrudes into his family life:

“You think he’s gone.  He’s not gone.  That’s the whole point.  He’s never gone!”
