Framing the Dialogue

Steal Like An Artist

I guess when author Austin Kleon offered the direction to “steal” he meant to do as he did in this little book starting off with such sparkling advice as:

“garbage in garbage out”

“Google everything”

“Carry a notebook and pen wherever you go”

I have to admit to being rather disappointed in Steal Like an Artist and will grudgingly acknowledge that it got better in the second half.  Perhaps I expected too much?  The essence of the book is that what is “stealing” is that we are shaped by the world around us and our “art” is derived from our experiences.  For books that I read I usually look to novels for entertainment and non-fiction to learn something.  Austin Kleon offered a little entertainment and no education.  Perhaps you should steal his book rather than buying it like I did.
