Framing the Dialogue

Shall Not Be Infringed

“A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”

About a year ago there was a tragedy near where I live.  A mentally disturbed man started shooting at the psychiatric hospital killing a young man.  The tragedy hit home even more when it was discovered that his sister had also been murdered a year earlier.  She was also shot.  The family recently held an event to raise money “to prevent gun violence.”  That is understandable, but I couldn’t help but wonder why just “gun violence?”  Why not all violence?  Why not try to stamp out violent people?  Why not try to have psychotics taken off of the streets?  It may sound trite, but guns don’t kill people…people kill people.  Do you doubt that a murderer will no longer murder if they cannot get a pistol?

The gun debate has heated up after the mass murder in a Colorado theatre.  Media rats were quick to make pronouncements (Brian Ross – ABC News) only to eat crow later when the shooter was not a TEA Party member.  The sad state of our  left winged main stream media is another story for another time.  I know a little about guns and am amazed at how little media types try to know about firearms and ammunition.  News reports love to use the term “semi-automatic” weapon.  That sounds dangerous, but it simply means that you have to pull the trigger each time.  All legal guns are semi-automatic.  They love to tout the evils of hollow-point bullets except that these slugs do not travel through objects like walls , people, etc.  Another favorite is the “assault rifle.”  Again true assault rifles are illegal to own.  Lots of folks, however, like the look of the rifles and own semi-automatic look-a-likes.  You can certainly find out more information by folks more knowledgeable than me…perhaps the National Rifle Association website

What surprised me  was how quiet the occupant of the White House has been about the whole gun issue.  In fact this administration went WAY out of their way to say that they are not going to pursue and new gun laws.  It’s not because they have seen the light, well they sort of saw the light.  They still would love to take all of our guns, but this is an election year and pushing gun control is bad for getting votes;

Most citizens do not own guns.  Most citizens do not need to own a gun as long as the criminals don’t know that you don’t have a gun.  It’s simple logic regarding gun “control” that liberals don’t seem to get.  CRIMINALS DON’T FOLLOW THE LAWS!  Hence tighter and tighter restrictions mean bad guys have guns and good guys don’t.  Chicago has tried and tried and tried to enact some of the strictest gun control laws (they keep losing court battles to the NRA and others), but God love how they keep trying.

“If the city wants to take guns off the streets, all they have to do is enforce the law and make sure criminals don’t have guns.  Good people are not the problem. That’s a simple concept the city of Chicago has not been able to grasp.”

– – Andrew Arulanandam, spokesman for the NRA. – –

“The war zone-like statistics are not new. As WBEZ reports, while some 2,000 U.S. troops have been killed in Afghanistan since 2001, more than 5,000 people have been killed by gun fire in Chicago during that time, based on Department of Defense and FBI data.”

 Our friends in the UK did what most Democrat politicians would love to do.  They completely banned the ownership of handguns and…violence by people using guns actually soared.  If guns are outlawed, only criminals will have guns.

“The underlying premise of nearly every type of gun control is that crime will be reduced…A 1985 National Institute of Justice report by professors James Wright and Peter Rossi found that the armed citizen or the threat of the armed citizen is possibly the most effective deterrent to crime and the nation. More than 1,800 prisoners were interviewed, and it was found that 85 percent agreed that the smart criminal will attempt to find out if a potential victim is armed; 75 percent felt burglars avoided occupied dwellings for fear of being shot; 53 percent did not commit a specific crime for fear the victim was armed, and 57 percent of handgun predators were scared off or shot at by armed victims…The simple fact is that criminals will find a way to commit crimes.”

 As liberals continue to probe the depths of their insanity (doing the same thing over and over expecting a different result), I need to move away from the self protection argument.  The real thrust of our Second Amendment right is to protect against a tyrannical government.  Remember that the Founders were under the thumb of a King, had no real representation, and distrusted government, especially a strong central government.  Remember the Tenth Amendment;

“The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.”

I’ll leave you with some thoughts from an unlikely source.  Actor, Rapper, husband of Coco…Ice-T;
