We are bludgeoned daily about eating right. Eat oatmeal, don’t eat bacon (a very sad statement), lots of fruit, lots of veggies, wash everything, eggs are bad, coffee is, I cannot remember whether coffee is good or bad right now. Same for milk…good to grow strong bones bad because of the fat, hormones, antibiotics, and cows are probably uncomfortable when the milk is “removed” from their udders.
Finally some research that we can use:
“Controlling only for age and gender, compared to moderate drinkers, abstainers had a more than 2 times increased mortality risk, heavy drinkers had 70% increased risk, and light drinkers had 23% increased risk. A model controlling for former problem drinking status, existing health problems, and key sociodemographic and social-behavioral factors, as well as for age and gender, substantially reduced the mortality effect for abstainers compared to moderate drinkers. However, even after adjusting for all covariates, abstainers and heavy drinkers continued to show increased mortality risks of 51 and 45%, respectively, compared to moderate drinkers.”
Researchers followed nearly 2,000 participants over twenty years to look at alcohol consumption’s affect on mortality. From what I read and I am not in the medical field, but abstainers fare the worst followed by heavy drinkers, then light drinkers, leaving the moderate drinkers as achieving the best results.
Translation: drinking some alcohol is good for you as you get older, “moderate alcohol consumption continued to show a significant, though attenuated, association with lower mortality risk.” According to the Heart Healthy Blog that translates to 2 drinks per day for men and one per day for women. For those of you who read this and are friends that does not mean 7 drinks on a Saturday night a few more during the football games and one or two during the week to average 2 drinks per day.
In an unrelated study it was found that drinking by my children who are under the age of 21 is very dangerous and should be avoided at all costs. Even those over the legal age should consume only on rare occasions…rare occasions.
I was just kidding about the oatmeal so please continue to consume it. May favorite method is to mix it with butter, sugar, eggs, baking powder, baking soda, flour, and raisins then baked for 12 minutes and consume with a glass of ice-cold milk while the concoction is still warm.
