Framing the Dialogue

Liberal Alters – Minority-Friendly Politics

Perhaps the most successful aspect of liberal politics has been their stranglehold on what is called the “main-stream” media. Though that has diminished over the last decade it is still an extremely powerful tool for progressive/liberal. I can think of no better example of this than the mischaracterization that Republicans/conservatives hate minorities while the Democrats/liberals are their champions. The evidence to the contrary is staggering yet is rarely noted when discussions of race enter the dialogue. The blatant disregard of FACTS when making arguments about race boggles my mind though I can understand that as long as liberals get away with it they’ll use it.

The United States Constitution has gotten a lot of press lately. In a nutshell conservatives want to strictly adhere to its tenants especially in light of an ever expanding role of the federal government in our lives. Liberals generally consider the Constitution of living document needing interpretations to deal with today’s issues. A popular excerpt of the Constitution is called the three-fifths compromise (Article 1, Section 2, Paragraph 3). Many liberals point to this section as proof that the founders were racist as a slave constitutionally counted as only three-fifths of a person. That does sound damning if you only read the words without historical context and future actions of President Lincoln.

“Representatives and direct Taxes shall be apportioned among the several States which may be included within this Union, according to their respective Numbers, which shall be determined by adding to the whole Number of free Persons, including those bound to Service for a Term of Years, and excluding Indians not taxed, three fifths of all other Persons.”

First the historical context and I admit to perhaps simplifying this a bit. The three-fifths compromise did “value” slaves/blacks less than free citizens. I assume that free blacks were counted as whole persons. The reality was that southern/slave states actually wanted the slaves counted at their actual numbers. Their slaves would not have any rights derived from that, but their numbers would have counted toward federal representation thus giving southern/slave states more power, power to continue slavery. By proposing the three-fifths compromise northern anti-slavery officials diminished the southern states’ power bringing slavery closer to an end. It is disingenuous to now claim that the three-fifths rule was just a racist policy when it was clearly a measure toward both ending slavery and keeping the fragile union together.  You will easily find contrary interpretations of the compromise.

Slavery is bad. American leaders did make compromises with slave states to continue the practice in order to keep the “Union” together. We can have lively debates about whether this was good or bad, but we should not lose sight of the fact that a Republican President Lincoln engaged in a Civil War to maintain the Union and end slavery, nearly a half million Union soldiers died during the war, over a quarter million were wounded and Lincoln later delivered the Emancipation Proclamation pronouncing an end to slavery.

Another popular misconception is that Republicans are against civil rights and minorities in general. It doesn’t take much digging to look at the actual historic record where Lyndon Johnson, in trying to pass both the Civil Rights  and Voting Rights legislation, had to rely on congressional Republicans because many of his fellow Democrats tried every trick in the book kill the bill.   The percent of Republicans who supported both efforts exceeded the Democrats and in fact southern Democrats worked tirelessly to filibuster the bill including Senator Robert Byrd (D-WV) who himself contributed a delaying speech that lasted over 14 hours.

“On the Democrat side, the Senate leadership did support the bill, while the chief opponents were Senators Sam Ervin (D-NC), Al Gore (D-TN) and Robert Byrd (D-WV). Senator Byrd, whom Democrats still call “the conscience of the Senate,” filibustered against the 1964 Civil Rights Act for fourteen straight hours”

I found a series of videos by a group called The Black Sphere putting to bed another liberal myth that there are no black conservatives.  I think that you will enjoy this video link (I typically embed these videos, but WordPress was not cooperating with me tonight).  Democrat media hacks love to play gotcha with Republicans and recently went after Senator Rand Paul about some remarks about the Civil Rights Act.  Michael Steele came to his defense and Politifact concured with Steele’s defense of Paul.  It may interest you to know that the NAACP was started by white Republicans in the early 1900s.  This excerpt from the Black Sphere fairly sums up their contributions to the black cause;

“What exactly have [NAACP] they accomplished for black people in the modern day?  The worse neighborhoods in America. The worse schools. The highest crime rates. The most people on welfare, per capita. Highest teenage pregnancy per capita. Highest high school dropout rates per capita. Lowest home ownership per capita. Lowest business ownership per capita.  Here’s the wrap:  The NAACP couldn’t do worse for blacks if it had been founded by Confederate Civil War veterans.”

Perhaps the biggest lie about how much Democrats care about minorities is how the Democrats continue to push the welfare system on to the backs of poor minorities. This yoke of dependence has destroyed the structure of minority families in a number of ways through the replacement of “fathers” with a government check and financially rewarding behaviors that are detrimental to families (unmarried pregnancies). Every election Democrats demonize conservatives claiming that they want to take away their entitlements; promising to stop Republicans for the cost of their continued support (i.e. vote). Hence the nearly fifty year spiral for minorities.

Contrast the fate of black minorities with other newer groups who have immigrated to the United States and have been extremely successful. American blacks are no less capable yet they don’t seem to enjoy the same number of successes.

“Indices of dollars of income, standards of living, and years of education deceive.… The fundamental problem…is that of family structure. The evidence…is that the Negro family in the urban ghettos is crumbling. A middle-class group has managed to save itself, but for vast numbers of the unskilled, poorly educated, city working class the fabric of conventional social relationships has all but disintegrated.… So long as this situation persists, the cycle of poverty and disadvantage will continue to repeat itself”

This was an excerpt from a report by Daniel Patrick Moynihan from 1965.

There is just too much to cover!
