My son introduced me to the world of Gary Vaynerchuk, a sort of Tony Robbins except that Mr. Vaynerchuk has some success beyond his lectures and books. I am not sure that came out right, but Gary Vaynerchuk (it is so much fun carefully typing his last name) cashed in on his passion (wine) and has used both conventional and unconventional methods to become successful, turning his family business from profitable to mega-profitable. While Robbins is best known for speaking, just speaking.
In Crush It, Gary Vaynerchuk gives away all of his methods to use today’s resources to achieve your passion. Using the networking tools available today, you to can turn your passion, hobby, love into a career. If you think Facebook is for kids and Twitter is for twits, you are probably missing out on the way to knock your business out of the park. Vaynerchuk really preaches that “there is no excuse for anyone living in the United States or anywhere else right now to slog through his or her entire life at jobs they hate, or even jobs they simply don’t love.”
Please do not get the idea that this is a get rich quick book, because it is not. You have to start by building your personal brand, or what YOU WANT TO DO. You are your product whether it is wine like Vaynerchuk or gardening or shoes. If you have the passion and work hard, you can crush it using new platforms. You no longer need big bucks and billboards to succeed when you have the Internet and twitter.
I found the book inspiring as I want to Crush It with my blog and feel poised to roll. It has been nearly a year for me and I have produced a lot of content and have had some pretty good feedback, but have not tipped yet. Vaynerchuk’s book has shown me some light and has given me a lot of tips to push ahead. One of the biggest tips it to keep it real and work really hard (OK two tips). I have been working full time and still blogging and really have found a passion. I can spend hours researching a post or spend hours working on one image for a post, but it never gets old. I have stacks of ideas that will probably never get published and I have never not had an idea for a posting.
The new platforms scare the hell out of me, but stick with me and let’s crush the new media.
Get a copy of Vaynerchuk’s book for inspiration and guidance.
Lectures from Gary Vaynerchuk are widely available on You Tube and the following is a portion of a speach that he gave in 2008. This was my first exposure to Gary and please caution that if you are offended by coarse language, you probably should not watch it.
