Betsy McCaughey is the former lieutenant governor from New York. It is unclear how a Pittsburgher ended up in New York, but we will forgive her as she has become one of the most articulate voices for sanity in the health care debate. In a nutshell, she has been speaking against the massive overhaul proposed by the Obama Administration. She has had the nerve to use facts and figures to dispute claims by Pelosi, Reid, and Obama to scare folks into supporting their efforts. With all of their efforts, however, Rasmussen reports that 54 percent of Americans oppose the new plan (44% strongly opposed) while 42 percent (down from 45%) support the plan (only 23% strongly support).
True American Heroes
Sail on, O Ship of State!
Sail on, O Union, strong and great!
Humanity with all its fears,
With all the hopes of future years,
Is hanging breathless on thy fate!
The begining of this Longfellow poem was used by Lord Christopher Moncton to end his address at Bethel University last week. I had never heard that poem before, but Lord Monckton told the audience that it was also used by Winston Churchill in an address to FDR as we entered World War II. It shows the deep love, respect, and hope that our country represents to many in the world. Lord Monckton also said these touching words:
Unfortunately for Minnesota, they are recently most known for having a former boa-wearing wrestler as a governor and a tax-evading, “comedy” writer as their newest senator. There is a bright spot withing the land of 10,000 lakes beside Republican Governor Tim Pawlenty and she is Representative Michele Bachmann.
Rep. Bachmann first appeared on my radar when she spoke out strongly about the 2010 census. The federal government has a constitutional authority to conduct a count of the number of citizens:
Andrew Breitbart seems to be doing what most of the news media will not do…bring us the news. Maybe the media never did it and there were not alternative sources like Breitbart. Breitbart has been at the forefront of the recent exposure of ACORN as a corrupt organization. To be fair, Glen Beck and Bill O’Reilly have been investigating and reporting on ACORN for a while. Their problem was that their reports were full of detail and facts.
My first exposure to Governor Rick Perry of the Great State of Texas was listening to an interview when he was visiting the Left State of Pennsylvania a few years ago. Gov. Perry and the correspondent (sorry, but I can neither remember nor find references to this interview) were discussing the Texas Legislature and their activity. This is of great interest to Pennsylvanians as we have one of the largest (and costliest) legislatures in the country.
One of my favorite newscasters is Fox News’ Brit Hume and Special Report was a frequent place for me to get my “Fair and Balanced” news. Within that newscast Brit usually had three journalists who discussed current events as the “Fox All-Star” panel. The panel always offered balanced opinions which in the eyes of the Main Stream Media (MSM) made it look conservative. Funny how perspective can skew your vision and make you miss the obvious.
Update May 12, 2009 – In what is now my quickest update, The Donald decreed that Miss Prejean’s photographs were “acceptable” and that she may keep her Miss California crown. As I searched for news reports on today’s events, I was struck by this blurb:
“Donald Trump will announce whether he will let gay-bashing, born-again beauty Carrie Prejean keep her crown.”
The MSM and the vitriolic left just cannot let it go. I’ll finish this short update using Mr. Trump’s words:
“Carrie is totally beautiful, and her answer, because of that, took on greater importance. Unfortunately, that’s the way the press works. You should be ashamed of yourselves.”
The Miss USA Pageant is not high on the list of anyone’s must see television. It seems like a kind of antiquated show from the past. Many probably did not know that it was even still on the air. My only real memory of the contest was when long-time host Bert Parks sang the theme song as that year’s winner took her victory lap. Actually thanks to Glenn Beck this morning, I learned that there is actually a Miss America Pageant (that’s the one Bert Parks hosted) and Miss USA Pageant (Trump’s version).
“The ultimate determinant in the struggle now going on for the world will not be bombs and rockets but a test of wills and ideas-a trial of spiritual resolve: the values we hold, the beliefs we cherish and the ideals to which we are dedicated.”
Growing up Catholic nearly 50 years ago did not entail a great deal of “gray” areas when it came to right vs wrong debates. The Ten Commandments are pretty clear and Sister Mary Margaret let us know when we strayed. Punishment was swift and we survived and were better for it. As a parent, I especially like number Four (Honor your Father and your Mother), I am not sure my children get the whole “honor” thing (that should trigger a comment if they read my posts).
“The truth that makes men free is for the most part the truth which men prefer not to hear.”
My next True American Hero is, of all things, a corporate officer of American International Group, better known as AIG. Jake DeSantis was an executive vice president of AIG’s financial products unit for the past 12 months. It seems like a stretch to suggest that anyone from AIG is a hero, but there are many left in the company who are trying to fix the problems and many former AIG employees are speaking.
