Framing the Dialogue

Boehner Fact-Twisting

boehnerFresh off of celebrating the “retirement” of Weeper-of-the-House John Boehner I am finding it interesting the spin put on his sudden decision to “spend more time with his family.”  Okay he didn’t say that.  My guess is that he saw the handwriting (lack of support) on the wall and knew that even if he survived the attempt to dump him as the Republican House leader, he would be severely crippled.  Hell he may not have been able to help Obama reach his goals.

I often enjoy a Sunday breakfast and read the local paper.  Our “conservative” paper generally advertises their balanced news and conservative views.  This front page, above-the-fold headline caught my eye;

Parsimony – Living Wage D.C. Style

minimum wageThe wonderful do-baders (they actually think they’re dogooders) in the District of Columbia really care about their citizens that they are pushing through a new law that will require large retailers (Wal-Mart) to pay a 50% (yes that’s percent not “cents”) premium over the existing minimum wage. The Washington Post reports:

Premium on minium wage mandated by D.C. lawmakers could chase Wal-Mart jobs elsewhere

WASHINGTON — District of Columbia lawmakers gave final approval on Wednesday to a bill requiring certain large retailers [Wal-Mart] to pay their employees a 50 percent premium over the city’s minimum wage, a day after Wal-Mart warned the law would jeopardize their plans in the city. [The parent, Wal-Mart, warned the children, DC lawmakers, that the fire was hot, but they touched it anyway.]

Parsimony – Good Green Jobs

green jobsI have to wonder if elected representatives, upon taking their seat in the legislature, are given a notebook with official buzz words to use. I doubt that there is such a document mostly because its existence would become known and published. Based on news reports newly elected officials are promptly “initiated” by senior elected officials and put in their place; nothing written; nothing recorded. This episode of parsimony features a Pennsylvania politician proposing to increase (i.e. FORCE) power companies to purchase more solar and wind power…

Parsimony – War On Fox

Neither the lame-stream media nor the far left seem to know what to do about Fox News.  They both agree to some old fashioned blocking of the free press, but Fox is just too big and too popular, and thus has too big of a soapbox.  This latest folly from the Adulterated Press (AP) is cute, but worth parsing…

Fox’s correspondent on front lines with Obama

…Now the story with my bold comments:

Parsimony – You Didn’t Drill That

Yet again an Associated Press story is the muse of a Parsimony post. I don’t seek out AP stories, but it often seems like their reporting often shows the bias of the mainstream media. This article is just in time for the 2012 election cycle and puppets Obama’s misspeak (by misspeak I of course he blurted out what he really believes) regarding government’s role in funding private business. By the way this was a front page article in my local “conservative” newspaper.

Federal Dollars Fueled Natural Gas Boom

…Now the story with my bold comments:

Parsimony – Right-To-Work

Yet again an Associated Press story is the muse fo a Parsimony post.  I don’t seek out AP stories, but it often seems like their reporting often shows the bias of the mainstream media.

First the headline (with a link to the original story)…

Unions expect right-to-work will cost them members

…Now the story

INDIANAPOLIS – After losing their fight against right-to-work legislation, labor organizers are making a desperate bid on shop room floors and at union halls to persuade members to keep paying their union dues and avoid crippling labor’s influence in Indiana [and all across the country although that has been the trend for more than a decade with decreasing membership in the private sector].

Parsimony – Taxing Effort

I find it very interesting that a good number of these posts use an Associated Press story as the baseline for my commentary. I don’t seek out AP stories, but it often seems like their reporting often shows the bias of the mainstream media.

First the headline (with a link to the original story)…

GOP moves toward slashing, nixing states’ income tax

…Now the story

OKLAHOMA CITY — A year after Republicans swept into office across the country, many have trained their sights on what has long been a fiscal conservative’s dream: the steep reduction or elimination of state income taxes. [So far so good]

Parsimony – Illegal Hotline

In “Parse-imony” I break down current news stories with my pithy, running commentary…

First the headline…

Feds create hotline for detained immigrants

…and now the story:

LOS ANGELES — Federal immigration officials Thursday announced creation of a telephone hotline to ensure that detainees held by local police are informed of their rights [I thought that was what the courts, and lawyers, and hearings, and trials were for?]

Parsimony – Obama Overhaul

In “Parse-imony” I break down current news stories with my pithy, running commentary…

First the headline…

Obama pulls plug on part of health overhaul law

…and now the story:

WASHINGTON – (AP) — The Obama administration says it is unable to go forward with a major program in the president’s signature health care overhaul law — a new long-term care insurance plan. [broken promises]

Officials said Friday the long-term care program has critical design flaws that can’t be fixed to make it financially self-sustaining. [Perhaps had they spent a little time doin some cipherin they could have figured this stuff out ahead of time.  It is hard to believe that the White House’s fiscal projections were flawed.]

Parsimony – Boeing Blast

In “Parse-imony” I break down current news stories with my pithy, running commentary…

First the headline…

Drug raid nets dozens at Philadelphia Boeing factory

…and the story

PHILADELPHIA — Federal agents on Thursday raided a Boeing [second mention of their name] plant that makes military helicopters in a Philadelphia suburb and charged more than three dozen people with distributing or trying to get prescription drugs, among them powerful painkillers. [remember that the Obama Administration’s Labor Department has an ongoing dispute with Boeing]
