Ghost of America’s Future?

tytler-cycleIn 1887 Alexander Tyler, a Scottish history professor at the University of Edinburgh, had this to say about the fall of the Athenian Republic some 2,000 years prior:

“A democracy is always temporary in nature; it simply cannot exist as a permanent Form of government. A democracy will continue to exist up until The time that voters discover that they can vote themselves generous Gifts from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates who promise the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that every democracy will finally collapse over loose fiscal policy, (which is) always followed by a dictatorship.”

The Andalucian Friend

andalucian friendIn The Andalucian Friend I have to admit to being somewhat lost through the beginning as author Alexander Soderberg developed his characters.  Though this is not my favorite format the author quickly got to the point where connections were made.  Set mostly in Sweden the characters are very interesting in that the traditional bad guys and good guys don’t always follow expected norms.  This is not your typical criminal investigation novel as there are very few sympathetic characters and the ones that may be have checkered pasts.  True evil in The Andalucian Friend may not rest with the gangster.

As Ye Sow…

…So Shall Ye Reap

P1280781Like many others I was disappointed, though not surprised, to learn that our politicians and our President in particular enjoyed making life difficult for many of us due to sequestration.  Even though it was his idea and he signed it into law and he would do nothing to prevent it, he still rails against its cuts.  As I think about the many negative things that have taken place since November 2012 and there have been a lot I have come to a conclusion about to whom we have to thank.  Sure it’s Obama, and Reid, and Pelosi, and Boehner, and McCain, etc. who really all want nothing more than bigger and bigger government.  BUT those really at fault are those nimrods who voted for Obama and even more so to the idiots who stayed home allowing him to get re-elected.  I simply the same number of folks who voted for McCain in 2008 had voted for Romney in 2012 we’d have a new president.  You CANNOT make me believe that you thought that McCain was better than Romney?

America The Beautiful

“I would like to see scientists and engineers get much more involved in the political process, bringing their no-nonsense common sense and logic to the table.”

Defending The Indefensible

vote hereSo you want to register to vote in Arizona. Their state law requires that you produce documents proving that you are a United States citizen. This is pretty simple stuff though! Simple for most of us except that the Obama Administration is taking Arizona to court AGAINST this law. Yes you heard right the United States Government under Obama is fighting against requiring proof that you are a citizen before you register to vote. I know that I keep restating that, but it just doesn’t make a whole lot of sense for the Democrats/left to fight against having ONLY American citizens vote in our elections. Sorry folks, but this position is indefensible by the left;

We Must Stop This Legislation!!!!

The Americans With No Abilities Act

No cluePresident Barack Obama and the Democratic Senate are considering sweeping legislation that will provide new benefits for many Americans. The Americans With No Abilities Act is being hailed as a major legislative goal by advocates of the millions of Americans who lack any real skills or ambition.

“Roughly 50 percent of Americans do not possess the competence and drive necessary to carve out a meaningful role for themselves in society,” said California Sen. Barbara Boxer. “We can no longer stand by and allow People of Inability (POI) to be ridiculed and passed over. With this legislation, employers will no longer be able to grant special favors to a small group of workers, simply because they have some idea of what they are doing.”

Misguided (mis-ˈgī-dəd)

The dictionary defines misguided as:

1. led or prompted by wrong or inappropriate motives or ideals, well-meaning but misguided do-gooders

2. poorly conceived or thought out.

Synonyms: unwise, mistaken, foolish, misled, misplaced, deluded, ill-advised, imprudent, injudicious

double-standardExample 1: Nanny MO (Michelle Obama) has been a champion for obesity, okay anti-obesity. She recently came out with some ideas on how to better run supermarkets. She has a special knowledge since she probably hasn’t routinely purchased food for her family for at least five years and probably longer. Certainly her background as a lawyer has prepared her for this campaign and it is a worthy one…up to a point. Education is important, but when she steps into the “government control” mode my hackles rise;

Calculated In Death

calculated in deathPresumable set in the future, circa 2060, in New York we have a successful detective and her associates involved in a murder investigation that was supposed to look like a mugging gone bad. I guess even author J.D. Robb couldn’t imagine NYC being a much better place in the future. That aside there is not much futuristic toys used in by the police except for some souped up communications and what amounts to skeleton keys for buildings in Calculated in Death.
